The Ochre Pits is located 110km west of Alice Springs. It is a colourful outcrop of ochre on the banks of a sandy creek. Ochre has always been an important part of Aboriginal culture and a vital part of everyday life, e.g. medicinal purposes, as a magical charm, protect wooden weapons from termites. Be warned, a $5,000 fine is imposed on non-aboriginal people if they remove ochre from this area.
